Featured articles

Featured articles that I have written, or contributed significantly to, and have nominated for FAC in chronological order :

Anne Frank
Kylie Minogue (both with User:Plek)
Sharon Tate
Sunset Boulevard
Vivien Leigh
Bette Davis

In the future I would like to see the articles on Myrna Loy, Carole Lombard, All About Eve and Blondie improved and raised to FAC. Then I may retire.

Things that annoy me

# The word "massive" used as an adjective to suggest a high level of success.
# The word "legendary" used as an adjective to describe any person.
# The word "megastar" used as an adjective to describe any person, except Dame Edna Everage.
# The term "passed away" used as a euphemism for death or dying. People may "pass away" in the real world, but in encyclopedias they die.
# Articles that say so and so passed away, aged X. The dates of birth and death are in the lead section, and having someone work out the age to save the poor, foolish reader from doing a simple mathematical calculation, makes me think of "Wikipedia for Dummies".
# As above, but with the age preceded by the word "only". Yes it's sad, but if we're going to be touched by the sadness of it, we'll see it and feel sad without someone underlining it and tugging at our heartstrings.
# Sentences about someone dying that start with the word "unfortunately". Stating the bleeding obvious really.

These are the only things that drive me to apoplexy.

My image gallery

These are photographs that I've taken and have added to Wikipedia articles. There are not many - other people have beat me to it, in most cases. I'm putting these here, mainly so I can keep track of them.

Favourite moments

I think there is nothing less funny than vandalism and nothing sadder than editors who try so soooooooooooooo hard to be funny and clever and come up with.... vandalism. But when someone writes something in good faith that's just not quite right - I love it.

From Sally Rand

Or how one brave girl turned an embarassing personal problem into a career highlight :

"She also conceived and developed the bubble dance, in part to cope with wind while performing outdoors."

From Kylie Minogue

"She is the more beautiful and more talented older sister of Dannii Minogue".

Fair use

http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107

§ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use38
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.
